About Hearing Loss

The human ear is comprised of three parts: the external ear, the middle ear and the inner ear.  Sound vibrations are conducted through the external and middle ear into the inner ear.  In the inner ear these vibrations are converted into nerve impulses which then are transmitted to the brain.

Conductive hearing loss occurs when there is an obstruction or disease in the external or middle ear.  This loss can usually be treated medically or surgically with excellent results.

Sensorineural hearing loss occurs when there is injury or damage to the inner ear or to the hearing nerve.  This hearing loss is permanent and can be due to many causes, including loud noise, high fever, infections, heredity or normal aging.  Due to technological advances, hearing aids are able to help the vast majority of sensorineural hearing problems.

Mixed hearing loss is one which contains elements from both conductive and sensorineural hearing loss.

Central hearing loss involves the 8th cranial nerve and central auditory pathways.
