Tinnitus is a ringing or buzzing (or other sound) heard in the ears or head, not created by a sound in the environment. Tinnitus is a symptom, not a disease and can be caused by many different factors. Hearing loss is the primary cause, so a thorough hearing test is recommended. When the tinnitus lasts longer than five minutes, it is said to be prolonged and should be investigated. Tinnitus can be a sign of central hearing loss, especially if it is associated with vertigo (dizziness) and hearing loss. Central hearing loss involves the 8th cranial nerve and the central auditory pathways. Advanced audiological tests are performed to screen for this possible site of lesion or pathology.
Tinnitus evaluations are performed to measure the pitch (frequency) and loudness level of the tinnitus, and to assess whether masking or noise generated by hearing aids, tinnitus maskers or tinnitus instruments provide any relief. Tinnitus maskers are noise or sound generators, while a tinnitus instrument is a hearing aid plus a masker combined.
